In his book, ‘Emotional Intelligence – Why it can matter more than EQ’, the author, Daniel Goleman says, “many people with IQs of 160 work for people with IQs of 100, if the former has poor intrapersonal intelligence and the latter have a high one.”
So, how is it that leaders with high Emotional Intelligence(or EQ) are able to develop good relationships with others?
Mentioned below are the Top 7 actions that they take:
- They are very good listeners. They do tend to understand the perspective of others, when in a conversation.
- They are assertive. When they are not in agreement on something, they do put forth their point ahead, in an assertive manner, without getting into a confrontation.
- They are able to maintain their calm, whenever they are in a difficult situation. For, they do understand their emotions are also able to regulate themselves well.
- They are always open to taking feedback from others about their own performance. They are always willing to learn and improve themselves.
- They love their work. They also enjoy the company of others. They love organizing groups.
- When someone approaches them with a problem or concern, they are able to empathise with the person and take appropriate action to address the issue. For example, let’s imagine that a customer has an issue and is absolutely upset. The person with high EQ would patiently listen to the customer (cognitive empathy); understand the pain of the customer, putting self in the situation of the customer (emotional empathy) and take appropriate action to support the customer (compassionate empathy).
- These people accept self as well as others too. They attempt to find synergies while working with others.
In short, EQ (to put in a simple manner), is all about being aware of emotions of self and others and being able to create bond with others by being able to regulate or manage themselves.
